Known for its amazing spiny cones coming in at 5-8 pounds, they are the heaviest of any pine (also giving them the nickname of 'widowmaker'!); found growing in California from the San Francisco Bay Area down to northern Baja, a close cousin of Pinus ponderosa, they both feature long blue-green needles, their ranges also overlap some, with Coulter pines grower in drier sites than Ponderosa.
