Product Overview

Hardiness zones 3-9

A showy fern native to the eastern Americas and East Asia, excellent for native shade gardens, bogs, rain gardens, and wet areas along ponds and streams. They generally grow to 2-3ft, but with sufficient moisture may stand 5-6ft tall. Fertile fronds stiffly appear in early spring, quickly turning cinnamon brown, which contrasts beautifully with its yellowish-green, erect, pinnately-compound, sterile foliage. The cinnamon colored fertile fronds, and fibers around the base of these unique plants are what inspired the name. The fibrous roots are used to make Osmunda fiber or orchid peat, a soil alternative for epiphytic plants such as some orchids and bromeliads. PSh-Sh/M-W
